EOS Digital Rebel XT Consumer reports gave it a 76 rating.
Nikon D50 Consumer reports gave it a 69 rating.
I’m a nub just reading books on digital photography and want to start with an inexpensive and easy to use camera.

Canon’s entry-level dSLR’s have a reputation for being easier to step up to from the point and shoot world than Nikon’s. Once you’ve made the leap, though, the Canon still treats you like a P&S photographer. They don’t even give you a spot meter, for instance.

If you don’t like the colors created in the D50, you can use the Optimize Image>Custom menu and set it up to enhance or reduce overall saturation, alter contrast, or adjust each RGB hue plus or minus in small increments.

If you want “inespensive and easy to use,” check out a Nikon D40, which may have default settings more to your liking anyhow, since the processor is newer. The kit is $600 with a decent lens. The comparable Canon Rebel XT kit is $570, though. You’ll have to just pick up each camera and see how they feel to you. I know you are new at this, but you still might just like one better than the other. Either one would be a good starting camera.

Consumer Distributed File Systems. $115.71 Local file systems file systems are no longer sufficient to manage consumer data due to the emergence of consumer electronics (CE) devices such as cell phones and digital cameras and the rapid increase of multimedia data. CE devices are a problem for local file systems because they store user data outside the purview of the local file system on heterogeneous devices. This dissertation demonstrates techniques to connect CE devices to a distributed file system with the goal of bringing all of a users storage devices into a single distributed storage system to ease management. This work also demonstrates ensembles, groups of disconnected devices that can band together to provide each other with data and updates, improving data consistency and availability. New, higher level management techniques are also needed to help manage the growing multimedia data. This work introduces persistent queries, a reliable notification mechanism for applications that allows them to provide typespecific behavior across the distributed file system. To allow the addition of typeaware features in the file system itself, we designed sprockets, a technique that allows code to be safely loaded and run in the address space of a distributed storage system. Finally, we built TrapperKeeper, a system that simplifies the extraction of file metadata by reusing the file parsing and display behavior of existing applications instead of requiring the specialpurpose fileparsing code be built. By combining these contributions, we have extended the reach of distributed file systems to cover all of a users storage and we have simplified data management by providing mechanisms to extract and use type information to handle distributed data.
